The European Parliament voted to defeat a resolution that would deny the granting of the GSP+ tariff concessions to Sri Lanka.
According to the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Harsha de Silva, Sri Lanka won the vote overwhelmingly after 436 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) voted against, 119 voted in favour, and 22 abstained for the motion to deny the granting of GSP+ for Sri Lanka.
A European Parliamentary group had tabled the resolution in the EU Parliament against granting GSP+ to Sri Lanka for its exports to the 28- member bloc, citing concern over Colombo’s “worryingly slow” progress on key issues like human rights.
