Geetha’s Parliamentary post annulled; appeal filed at SC
The Secretary-General of Parliament, Dhammika Dasanayake, has informed the Chairman of the Election Commission that the MP post of Geetha Kumarasinghe has been annulled in line with the Court of Appeal verdict.
The Court of Appeal on Wednesday (3rd May 2017) ruled that Kumarasinghe, a former Galle district parliamentarian, could not hold a seat in parliament as she was also a dual citizenship holder.
Geetha Kumarasinghe has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court against the Court of Appeal’s decision which disqualified her as a parliamentarian.
Speaking to journalists outside the EC office, Ms. Kumarasinghe said that she had handed over the documents pertaining to the appeal to EC. “I informed the Speaker of the House and the General Secretary of Parliament about my decision to appeal against the AC ruling. I hope justice will be served by the Supreme Court,” she said. She alleged she could have kept her seat in Parliament if she had no self-respect and joined hands with the government.
