Heroes of the Uva Wellassa rebellion to be declared patriots

President Maithripala Sirisena will be declaring around 82 heroes of the Uva Wellassa rebellion as patriots of the nation at a historic ceremony in Kandy tomorrow (1st March).
The ceremony, named ‘Uththamaabhiwandana’, will be held at 4.00 p.m. at the Magul Maduwa in Kandy. It is organized by the Department of Government Information. Chief Prelates of Malwatta and Asgiriya chapters, Ven. Maha Sangha, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, Ministers, Parliamentarians, and the family members of the heroes of 1818 rebellion are expected to be present.
The Uva Wellassa rebellion (1817-1818) is a non-military uprising against the British colonial government under Governor Robert Brownrigg, lead by Keppetipola Disawe. The rebels were put down, and were sentenced to the capital punishment and expatriated.
