Legal action in Dubai against Madush - PM
Legal action against drug kingpin Makandure Madush arrested in Dubai on Tuesday, will be initiated in the UAE, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament yesterday.
“We can request, but whether he will be deported to Sri Lanka or not is a decision of the courts of that country,” the PM added. He was responding to a question by JVP MP Dr.Nalinda Jayatissa.
The JVP MP, commending the joint operation of the Police STF to arrest Makandure Madush, questioned on the delay in arresting former Sri Lanka Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunge, former Sri Lanka Ambassador to US Jaliya Wickramasuriya and former Central Bank Governor Arjun Mahendran.
The PM said requesting for extradition after securing Interpol red notices is the normal procedure taken with regard to fugitive Sri Lankans. “If any such suspect is taking refuge in a country with which Sri Lanka has signed an extradition agreement, then the Government can make a request through the Foreign Affairs Ministry. The action would be decided on case by case basis,” the PM replied.
Dr Jayatissa demanded to know the number of fugitive Sri Lankans accused of theft, murders, money laundering and financial misappropriation. He also asked what action the Government has taken to bring them to Sri Lanka and produce before courts.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the Attorney General requested further time to submit those details as they must be obtained from 32 High Courts and 49 Magistrate’s courts.
