SL Navy sailor dies in Kochi, India
Lieutenant Commander Chandima Walakuluge, the Navy Spokesperson, revealed today (25th April) that Y. P. N. R. Weerasinghe, a Petty Officer, had drowned while engaging in diving training at a Naval Base in Kochi, India yesterday.
He was a 39 year old resident of Kurunegala. He and two other Navy sailors left on 3rd April to India.
The Press Trust of India (PTI) reports that the deceased was practicing diving in the Ernakulam Channel, and failed to surface. A rescue operation was launched immediately by the attendant supervisory training staff, and the body was recovered.
"The sailor was administered prompt first aid, and evacuated to the Naval Hospital. All attempts at reviving the sailor proved unsuccessful and he was declared dead at around 3 pm," the PTI reported quoting Indian Navy.
The Sri Lankan authorities were informed. The Indian Navy has set up a Board of Inquiry to deduce the cause of death.
Lieutenant Commander Walakuluge said that the body of the deceased will be brought to Sri Lanka tomorrow.
